BharatNet
BharatNet, also known as Bharat Broadband Network Limited, is a government-owned telecom infrastructure provider, set up by the Department of Telecommunications, a department of Ministry of Communications of the Government of India for the establishment, management, and operation of the National Optical Fibre Network to provide a minimum of 100 Mbit/s broadband connectivity to all 250,000-gram panchayats in the country.
The network will be utilised to offer all panchayats with different e-governance services as well as internet access. The NOFN project was implemented by Bharat Broadband Network Limited, which also owns the whole network. RailTel has been chosen as one of the implementation partners to lay the incremental optical fibre cable network that would connect the panchayats with their respective block headquarters at a speed of 100 megabits per second. Gujarat, Daman & Diu, Dadar & Nagar Haveli, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland are among the states where RailTel has been assigned 36,000 panchayats. As of May 31, 2022, a total of 27421 kilometres of optical fibre cable had been installed, and 7913 panchayats had been rendered ready for service.
